@Hunock the job of the co-driver is to tell the driver about the oncoming corners - how fast they are, do they have any dangers (slippery, tree/rock inside, narrow.. whatever), the numbers stand for the gear to use in that corner (3 left means left corner in third gear) and the -/+ mean is it slow in that gear or fast (5 left minus means fifth gear low rpms, 4 right plus means fourth gear high rpms) sorry if my english is bad

well, it depends on restrictor, if there will be bigger intake hole, they can get acctualy more power from smaller engine than from 2l engine.

close... they use special transmissions called dogboxes... they have straight-cut gears which are extremely strong so that the clutch is not necessary once out of neutral or first... you can just yank on the lever and they switch gears flawessly

i would think they have something close to what drag racing bikes do, where you use the clutch to start and stop but during gear changes an air pressure powered piston engages the clutch and changes gear for you. Or they could do something similar to what cars with paddle shifters do where as a computer controls the clutch. Just a thought. I have no idea if that's what they actually do.

Thats one way of putting it. It doesnt do the gearboxes much good but thats what their designed to do. Their re-built regularly and cost an absolute fortune so they can change gear no problem with no clutch.

No. Clutch only to start and stop. Notice about halfway through the video hes going flat in top gear and he tried to grab another gear.

They do use clutch when starting the stage and when goiing trough a hairpin,but not when changing gears normally

this the case with Mc Rae, Sainz, Makkinen, Gronhlom. Then you have the CHAMPION the guy who beat everybody everywhere, the guy who is so good not matter what rule will change to give the other a chance, he will win the same way. This guy is so good, he makes his opponents look very poor and people think this the reason why he wins everything. Here I am talking about Schumacher who competed against Senna and Loeb against Gronholm.

Plus in France Loeb is not a star since WRC, he used to be huge in the French championship on saxo kit car. The best ever you tell he would be world class. Plus he has driven among some great name, sainz, Groholm, Solberg all world champion. He beat them all. There are two waysof looking things like for Schumacher, either champion are just a bit better which makes them champions but you feel everybody had their chance, and then we feel that it was hard because there are 3 or 4 really good ones.

I also watch formula 1 and am a fan of Prost and Senna. I still watch Formula 1 and think Micheal Schumacher is the greatest of them all but I don't like the guy.

Loeb is 1 minute ahead of the fins on the first stage of the Cyprus Rally. one minute! If the rally was on Tarmac the 3 days at the end he would be 3 minutes ahead. The FIA cut the number of Tarmak rally but it won't change anything If they want him to lose they need to change his car for a Rover... Even with such an appalling car I bet he would win!

I love that in the colin mcrae rally game I have, the map co-ordinator (?) has the same kinda voice. And there's this map I played when it's four jumps and then a 2 turn. He says "and jump and jump and caution big jump and double caution big jump and 2 left minus" lol I was like "HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO MAKE THIS WITHOUT CRASHING!?" Haha it's the same question and same answer (and some wrong answers too, still) all over the reactions :D McRae and Grist only rarely used the 1 for non-hairpins, e.g. when a very tight road curls around a tree with very little space to use. Practically the same pace note system is used in the Colin McRae games, without plus and minus though.

It is just the sharpness on the turn. 1-> open turn 6-> tightest turn the other numbers (30, 40, 60) is the distance to the next turn. I guess in meters. 3 left minus 70 6 left the minus and the plus are like narrows or widens.

The night stages are gone, Kenya is gone, the mad drivers are gone, the spectacular jumps are gone etc. If I would beat todays drivers I wouldn't be sitting on youtube and complain. Sorry... To be honest, I don't think the number corresponds to the gear. I think it depends on the speed and difficulty of the corner. There are many 6es directly after harpins that are way too sharp to have been a 6th gear corners after a long straight. Keep in mind that he makes/corrects his own notes and that they are created at low speeds at a pre run on the thursday of the event. I think the grade has more to do with the amount of brake force needed than gear...

Exactly. McRae uses a system of 1-6 and harpins. Hairpins are the sharpest and 6es are the fastest corners. He has this strange "plus" system as well that I have not fully comprehended yet though.

Yes the 1-6 in the pace notes indicate how sharp the curve is. If you haven't reached that gear yet then that means you don't have to brake. I guess any driver who uses this system will after some time focus (:P) on his speed and not on the gear, and shift up/down based on how his speed relates to the pace note.

No I am not wrong. The only reason the gears sometimes don't correspond is because he had not reached the speed to use that gear. When a six left is called it means that he could enter it at a sixth gear speed(the appropiate speed range for sixth gear). For instance if there was a 2left into a 6right there is no way he could build up the speed to enter sixth gear so he would go through in either 2nd or 3rd. He notes all corners in the same method regardless what the previous corner was.

You are 100% wrong. Just watch the video. Count the gear he's throughout the video. They rarely correspond.

It's a sequential gearbox which means that you only need to touch the clutch for starting and 1st gear. After that you don't touch the clutch again that's why Rally-Drivers use their left foot for braking. Opens means the corner radius increases, so he can speed up a bit as he goes through the corner. Tightens means means it decreases, so he needs to slow down through the corner. The numbers let him know how fast to take a corner. If a corner opens, the first half may be a 3 and the second half a 4, for example. If the corner tightens, it might go from a 4 to a 3. Make sense?

The guy who explains the words of the co-driver is little bit wrong. Most of the drivers use numbers for how easy or hard a corner is: 1-easy, 6-hard. Plus means gas, minus means no gas. Example: "300 left 5 minus, right 1 plus, 100 right 3 minus" that means "300m straight, hard left no gas into easy right full gas, 100m straight not really hard no gas" hope that helps. RIP Colin, you were one of the greatest!
